    Draupadi Murmu is an Indian politician and the current Governor of Jharkhand, a state located in the eastern region of India. She was born on 20 June 1958 in Rairangpur, a small town in the Mayurbhanj district of Odisha, India. Murmu is a woman of many firsts – she was the first woman tribal MLA from Odisha and the first woman Governor of Jharkhand.

    Early Life and Education: Draupadi Murmu was born to Gobardhan Murmu and Gamay Murmu in a tribal family in Rairangpur, Odisha. Her parents were farmers, and Draupadi was the youngest of their six children. She completed her schooling from a local government school in Rairangpur and then went on to pursue a Bachelor's degree in Arts from Utkal University, Odisha. She also holds a Diploma in Library Science from Sambalpur University and a Bachelor of Education (B.Ed.) degree from Regional Institute of Education, Bhubaneswar.

    Career in Politics: Draupadi Murmu began her political career in 1997 when she joined the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in Odisha. She was first elected to the Odisha Legislative Assembly in 2000 from the Rairangpur constituency as a BJP candidate. In 2004, she was re-elected from the same constituency. During her tenure as an MLA, she served as the Vice-Chairperson of the Scheduled Caste and Scheduled Tribe Welfare Committee and also as a Member of the Committee on Welfare of Women and Children.

    In 2014, Murmu was appointed as the National Vice President of the BJP's Scheduled Caste Morcha. She continued to serve in this role until 2015 when she was appointed as the President of the BJP's Odisha unit. During her tenure as the President of the Odisha BJP, she worked to strengthen the party's presence in the state and also focused on the empowerment of women and tribals.

    On 18 May 2015, Draupadi Murmu was appointed as the Governor of Jharkhand by the President of India, Pranab Mukherjee. She became the first woman tribal leader to hold the position of Governor in India. As Governor, Murmu has been actively involved in various initiatives aimed at the development of Jharkhand and its people. She has focused on issues such as women's empowerment, tribal welfare, and rural development.

    Religion and Personal Life: Draupadi Murmu belongs to the Santhal tribe, which is one of the largest tribal communities in India. The Santhal tribe is predominantly Christian, and Murmu is also a Christian. She is married to Shyam Charan Murmu, who is a retired government employee, and the couple has two children.

In 2019, she was awarded the "Best Governor" award by the President of India, Ram Nath Kovind.
